Name Taken
Hold On (Fiddler)

By: Mike SOS

Name Taken is an Orange County, CA outfit whose apathetic approach to today's nu school punk may not be unique, but is pretty honest. Tracks like the glistening and dynamic turn of "A Year Spent Cold" amp up the standard broken-heart fare, as the dramatic arrangements on each of Hold On's 11-tracks find Name Taken in good company with bands like Taking Back Sunday, Glassjaw, and The Used. Drawing an air of the self-agonizing shared by bands like Thursday and started by luminaries like Morrissey is also a tactic employed by the group, helping songs like "Hold On For Your Dearest Life" hit that much harder. Clever song titles like "It Sounds Prettier in Spanish" suggest the band isn't as mundane as you'd like to believe, while overall, Name Taken's effort does a solid job at tugging at your heartstrings without sounding too much like a generic clone.
