Pat MacDonald
In The Red Room (self-released)

By: Alex Steininger

Former Timbuk 3 front man/songwriter Pat MacDonald, best known for writing the runaway hit, "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades", has gone a different path post-Timbuk 3, treading the waters of the early blues legends while adding his own rock 'n' spike to the mix. On his latest release, In The Red Room, which follows his Depeche Mode cover record entitled Strange Love: PM Does DM, MacDonald delivers a sweaty, energetic, burning collection of electric guitar and stomp board blues-rockers. Using just those two instruments, and his voice, MacDonald channels the spirits of the blues without any walls or distractions that sometimes occur when the full-on rock 'n' roll approach is attached to blues. Recorded live at the Red Room in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, a couple of blocks from MacDonald and his wife's U.S. residence, MacDonald sounds at ease - and seems to be having a blast. Here is a fiery, lively, stomping collection of thirteen tracks that will turn up the heat and make you want to groove. I'll give it a B+.
