Icycore
Wetwired (SPV)

By: Jeb Branin

Once upon a time you could bet good money that any emerging European prog metal band would have healthy doses of QUEENSRYCHE and FATES WARNING in their sound but over the last decade or so that has changed drastically. Now what you almost always have are bands that desperately want to sound like HELLOWEEN (sadly, few succeed). That said, ICYCORE must therefore be considered somewhat of an "oldschool" prog band. Yes, I realize that it is oxymoronic to suggest that a band can be both progressive and oldschool, but bear with me. What you get from ICYCORE on "Wetwired" is a plethora of forward-thinking metal that is intelligent, well written, and executed with a sizzling passion. It also packs a punch (for the most part). However, there is no HELLO-wannabeing anywhere on here. Instead this borrows from the more pure prog sound of the aforementioned pioneers QUEENSRYCHE and FATES WARNING. But it is not derivative in any way. In fact, this band has the chops that they could easily take the stage with any of today's top (pure) metal acts.
