John Vecchiarelli
Songs From Whoville (speckRECORDS)

By: Alex Steininger

John Vecchiarelli's latest, Songs from Whoville, finds the lo-fi pop, folk-infused singer-songwriter delivering a modest, honest batch of songs. With his well-worn voice portraying sadness and regret, he creates a mood-forming record that recalls a late night, walking in the rain, thinking of how the day (or week's) activities have lead to the final outcome. Sparse and minimalist, Vecciarelli still seems to, alongside the sorrow, create pretty, sparkling melodies, yet pulls the punches on them, choosing to have them lay low and slowly creep out from the back. This helps Vecchiarelli's tales seemingly glow with optimism and hope, making the record more than just your standard singer-songwriter, crying-in-your-beer affair. Vecchiarelli is a good songwriter and knows how to use the light, airy quality of his music to his advantage. The one thing he needs to work on is writing songs that really stand out. As a whole, this collection is solid and plays well in the background, but never does he write a song (or collection of songs) that really reach out and make you turn your head if you're not already paying attention. I'll give it a C+.
