Unleashed
Sworn Allegiance (Century Media)

By: Jeb Branin

UNLEASHED have never done a lot of things. They have never released an album that was anything short of phenomenal. They have never toned down their lyrical or musical imagery. They have never allowed themselves to be carried away from their root sound by the ever-changing tide of extreme metal. They have never been afraid to tell you that they are true death metal warriors. And they have never played at anything less than volumes that will rupture your spleen. UNLEASHED are true underground icons and with Sworn Allegiance they prove (yet again) that the new school still has a thing or two (or ten) to learn from the old school. This is probably their best album in years and will have fans (old and new) thrashing in pure metallic ecstasy. Lyrically they have returned in full glory to the Viking lore and legacy that seemed somewhat absent on their last album Hell's Unleashed yet they haven't abandoned vile "shock" lyrics either. And, of course, there are multiple songs that are simply a call-to-arms for the armies of the Unleashed. For over a decade UNLEASHED has been at the pinnacle of death metal in terms of skill, style, and pure brilliance. I say it's finally time they get the recognition they deserve. A pox on any death metal fiend who does not buy this album.
