Doug Gillard
Salamander (Pink Frost/Big Takeover)

By: Alex Steininger

Former Cobra Verde and Guided By Voices lead guitarist, Doug Gillard's debut solo record, Salamander, may not live up to the best songs written by GBV or its mastermind, Robert Pollard, but comparisons aside, it is a fine debut. With the same conviction and prowess as Pollard, Gillard delivers smart, indie-pop songs that reach out beyond their standard tag and become so much more when delivered by him, incorporating space-rock, power-pop, and good ol' rock 'n' roll into the mix to flesh out the songs. And though most of the time dwelling in the more subtle, laid-back pop settings, Gillard is able to get you listening attentively throughout the fourteen tracks on this album. I'll give it a B.
