Emperor X
Tectonic Membrane / Thin Strip on an Edgeless Platform (Snowglobe Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Emperor X is the name used by singer-songwriter Chad Matheny, who wrote and performed every song on his second full-length, Tectonic Membrane / Thin Strip on an Edgeless Platform, an eleven-track collection of electronic-infused indie-pop. Lo-fi to a tee, the stripped down, minimalist recording means mean you have to nail the performance and have good songs, or every error, every bad note, and every weird line will be painfully obvious. Lucky for Matheny, however, he does just that, doing lo-fi justice and creating a melodic, enjoyable record that has the joys of full band instrumentation, but lacks a punch in the recordings -- something Matheny is more than capable of making up for with his songwriting. This is lo-fi indie-pop as it was meant to be -- no bullshit, no gimmicks, just good songs and thus good melodies. I'll give it a B+.
