Ill Lit
I Need You (Badman Recording Co.)

By: Alex Steininger

With the instantly catchy, electronica-tingled indie-rock opener of "Mid-City," Ill Lit's sophomore record, I Need You is off to a good start. From there, though, the band gets less straight ahead, forgoing the rock structure for more folk-based offerings, implementing plenty of electronic components to give the songs depth ("In The Thick", "Spring Chicken"). From there, they get more roots-based ("Freeway"), but still manage a healthy dose of melody throughout, giving the songs a memorable quality throughout their rustic, relaxed atmosphere. It's experimental and innovative folk music for indie-rocks who love pop songs. And, in doing that, they possess elements of music that most music fans will embrace, so who wouldn't like this? I'll give it a B+.
