Smoke Off Vinyl Nice E.P. (SOV) By: Alex Steininger
Guitar-based rock that isn't too loud nor too aggressive, and oft dissident, Smoke Off Vinyl's Nice E.P. doesn't instantly grab you, its familiarity, though, does leave you expecting something. Even their cover of U2's "With or Without You" seems lacking the melodic drive and power of U2's version. Whereas U2 used a less-is-more mindset and leveraged your imagination and attention to fully embody the song, Smoke Off Vinyl fills out those holes, to the detriment of the song. Smoke Off Vinyl could be powerful; they have the voice and energy. They just don't seem to have the drive or ability to craft a strong presence in their songs to really grip you, and that is where things fall apart. I'll give it a C-.
