Humble Gods No Heroes (Hollywood Records) By: Alex Steininger
The Humble Gods are a punk band. Pure sweet punk with angry lyrics. Jason Thirsk, who has since departed us, plays bass in this band. For those of you who don't know, Jason was the bass player for Pennywise. This was his last recording. The CD starts out with some weird clown/circus music and then breaks into a fast, loud, and angry song called "Fucked Up." Drums that beat faster than your heart after a marathon race, pounding bass lines, fast and meaty guitar, and fast paced vocals that go from fast snarls to slower screams fill this song with so much energy. "Lied and Cheated," my favorite song on the album, is a big fuck you to the girl that keeps on cheating on you. Pissed off, yet over this girl, the vocalist pours out every emotion he is feeling, and with lyrics like, "ONCE is understandable/TWO TIMES your feeling the fool/THREE TIMES, yeah, that's it your out/FOUR TIMES that's me with a gun in my mouth," you come to sympathize with him. Track four, "Price Tag," starts off with the vocalist (Brad X) lightly throwing at you his problems with thick guitars in the background, and then it picks up a bit. The chorus, "I gotta price tag on my head/price tag on my head/what will be will have to be/I'll probably wind up dead/I gotta price tag on my head," is very catchy, and you find yourself singing along with it. The title track starts off soft, and then the drums tremendously beat down and the song picks up. The song takes on a moderate speed, and the chorus jumps up two notches and flies through a fast paced environment with clean snarls coming from Brad X's mouth. Next up with a brilliant cover of Tom Petty's classic "American Girl." All the hooks that Petty had, these guys lay them on twice as thick, literally. From heavy guitar to pounding bass and steady beats these guys do a great re-make of Tom Petty's song. Two thumbs up! Actually this might just be my favorite song on the album. It's a toss up between this and "Lied and Cheated." Track ten, "Mary's In Bondage Pants," seems like it's going to be a funny song. But they blend a little bit of humor with a serious undertone. And they do a good job of it too. "Paralyzed" starts off with some off-punk guitars, and then everything is pulled together and thrown into full gear. Once again they kick out the aggressive punk you want to here. Track sixteen offers you one of their songs mixed by the Insane Clown Posse. A ten minute and forty nine second song that must be experienced to believe. It's like the regular, "Running Out of Time," but with a few odds and ends thrown into a blender and a squirt of lemon added for twist. Humble Gods are a very aggressive punk band who releases a lot of their tension and anger into this CD. And they do it quite well! Sixteen tracks of punk rock sure to feed your appetite. I would give this album an A-. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.
