Lloyd Brevett and the Skatalites
African Roots (Moon Ska Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Lloyd Brevett was the tremendously talented bass musician for the pioneers of ska, The Skatalites. In 1965 The Skatalites went their own way, but in 1975 they all reunited to back their friend Lloyd (and fellow band mate) on his solo album. The final result was African Roots, and up until now this album has been long out of print. Now, thanks to Moon Ska Records, you'll be able to hear what is essentially the first reunion of The Skatalites. And what's more, Moon Ska Records adds a very tasty treat by adding four bonus tracks recorded during The Skatalites peak in the 60's.

The Skatalites started ska, and are a most for any fan of traditional ska. With choice cuts like "Stream in the Meadow," "Candle Light," "Fugitive," African Roots," "Japan Special," and "Rock With Me Baby," The Skatalites will serve up what you want. Bright horns the light up the night ska like fireworks, soft and relaxing beats and melodies, all thrown together to combine an atmosphere unlike any other. These guys serve it up hot, spicy, and ready to eat. No preparation time needed when these guys are involved. Although this album was recorded in 1975, it still shines bright like a star high in the sky. These guys are the experts on what ska should be, and they play it that way. No matter what mood your in, you'll always be in the mood for The Skatalites. Juicy horns that you'll want to sink your teeth into, mixed with bass lines that fill up the air while the drums and guitar play together to form an idea night for you. Just cuddle up on the couch and lay back and enjoy the soothing sounds of this band. And Lloyd, let's not forget him, was the primary song writer for this album, and boy can he write. He brings forth some very delicate and complicated tunes just for your ears.

If you haven't heard of Lloyd Brevett or The Skatalites you should be ashamed of yourself. But don't worry, there's a way for you to redeem yourself. Call Moon Ska Records today and order your very own copy of this album. You'll be very pleased you did. I give this album an A. It's so enjoyable, and if you can't afford that much needed vacation to Jamaica, these guys will bring the Island feeling to you.
