Word Gets Around (V2 Records)

Word Gets Around is the new album by Stereophonics, a Welsh trio. This album has just taken off in the UK and fittingly landed them a spot in the Top 10. Lead singer Kelly Jones writes their songs of small town tragedy with surrounding music that suggests Oasis if they were a punk band. Jones snarls like Billy Joe of Green Day, but this time the accent is real. The faster songs rock and are oh so catchy ("A Thousand Trees," "More Life In A Tramps Vest," "Check My Eyelids For Holes"). But they also have some meaning. Instead of singing about fast food restaurants or jerking off like most young bands, the Stereophonics have something to say. Jones' job before the band was writing drama for the BBC. It's this talent that shows on songs like "Local Boy In The Photograph," which is based on the true story of a boy who committed suicide on a railway line. His working class background comes out on "Traffic," which is the perfect anthem for people stuck in a small town. The only problem with the album is the songs are a bit too similar, but that's not much of a drawback when the songs sound this good. Grade: A-.
