Thrush Hermit
Sweet Homewrecker (Elektra Records)

By: Melissa Angew

The long awaited full-length debut on Elektra from Halifax's Thrush Hermit proved to be well worth the wait. "Sweet Homewrecker" is the follow-up to the band's 1995 EP, "The Great Pacific Ocean." Following in the footsteps of another great Canadian band, Sloan, Thrush Hermit signed with the American label Elektra for their major label debut. They recorded down in Memphis, Tennessee with Doug Easly. "Sweet Homewrecker" has 14 tracks that range from the fast paced "At my expense" to the slow ballad of "Came and Went." This is a very strong major label debut with songs like "Skip the Life" and "Darling don't Worry" can't help but get stuck in your head all day. Other strong songs include "Without you?", "On the sneak", "Strange to be involved", and "North Dakota".Thrush Hermit's 3 song writers, Ian McGettigan, Joel Plaskett, and Rob Benvie, contribute to an album filled with sharp poppy tracks that are the trademark sound of so many other great Canadian Bands. However, Thrush Hermit still manage to remain unique without sounding too abstract. The album is 47.27 minutes long but you don't even notice it as most of the tracks are under 4 minutes. This album is one of the best to come out of Canada's East Coast in years. If you're like me and love that Canadian pop/rock sound, go out and get Thrush Hermit's "Sweet Homewrecker."
