Madonna
Ray of Light (Maverick Records/Warner Bros.)

By: Paula M. Sherman

Thought-provoking and peaceful are words that can best describe this recent contribution from Madonna. It is clear that her wealth of life experience influenced this release entitled "Ray of Light". There are 13 tracks and each of them beam in an insightful way. The music is both mystical and techno, and these elements create an inspiring atmosphere for the eloquent lyrics that flow through the music.

The single, "Frozen", is accompanied by an equally majestic video that compliments this song nicely. "Substitute For Love" is another powerful contender in this compilation that deserves radio play. The title track "Ray of Light" combines tender guitar riffs with a finely produced synthesized feel and a upbeat tempo. All the songs are presented with a passionate and skilled voice that Madonna has honed through the years. Her talent shines brightly from beginning to end.

Although "Ray of Light" is different from her other releases, there is a fine line connecting them all together. You'll be able to hear reminiscent echoes from "Like A Prayer", "Erotica", "Bedtime Stories" and "Something to Remember". If you're a Madonna fan, this is a must have. But if you just want a peaceful set of music, to listen to when you come home from work, curled up with a glass of wine or a cup of tea; go out and get this one....play it....then close your eyes.

I give "Ray of Light" an A. Powerful work from a very talented woman!
