Shallow
High Flyin' Kid Stuff (Zero Hour)

By: Geoff Melton

Take Spaceman 3-like psychedelia and layered guitars reminiscent of a laid-back My Bloody Valentine, then add the completely captivating vocals of singer/guitarist Julie Fields, and you've got high flyin' kid stuff, the latest release from Kansas City's Shallow. Produced by Keith Cleversley (an expert at capturing bands like Shallow, as evidenced by his past work with Flaming Lips, Hum, Mercury Rev and Spiritualized) and fleshed out with a diverse array of instrumentation (cello, hammered dulcimer, piano, organ, bells and flute), as well as excellent use of samples, loops and sound effects, high flyin' kid stuff has become a mainstay in my CD player. (Zero Hour, 14 W 23rd St, NY, NY 10010).
