Pitchshifter
www.pitchshifter.com (Geffen Records)

By: Jen Brown

www.pitchshifter.com, is it a website, or is it an album title? Actually, it is both. www.pitchshifter.com is not only the official Pitchshifter website, but also the title of their newest release. The five piece band from Nottingham, England released their fourth full-length album on April 7, 1998 on Geffen Records. Pitchshifter formed in 1991, and contains the four core members, Johnny Carter (guitar and programing), J.S. Clayden (beats, riffs, and vocals), Mark Clayden (bass and samples), and D. Walters (percussion). Recently, guitarist Jim Davies was added.

Pitchshifter has created a new type of music, and yes, created is the correct choice of word. The band is about making music, creating samples, looping them together, and mixing them with hard fast paced back beats. The band has taken Electronica to a new level. Mixing jungle beats, guitar samples, and distorted vocals to create music that can only be played at one volume--LOUD. Although this album is a great one to play and just go crazy to, pay attention to the lyrics. Pitchshifter is taking the route of many other bands, such as Rage Against the Machine, using their music as a way to inform the masses of the problems of today's society. This aggressive album combines hard punk guitar line with heavy drum and bass beats, and should not be listened to laying down. Pitchshifter has expanded several forms of music by putting together www.pitchshifter.com. Taking dance, techno, punk, metal, and electronica to new levels by combining all of them.

One of the greatest things about this British band is that they have decided to give back to their fans. Much of their music is created through sampling, and therefore on the last track of www.pitchshifter.comthe guys have include 50 or so samples from the previous tracks of the album. This allows other Electronica music makers to sample from the band to create their own songs. All that the band asks is that credit be given where credit is due, and possibly sending them a copy of whatever music is made. They ask for no money. The samples are also available on their website as well, free of charge, and fans are encouraged to take them and experiment.

No matter what type of music you are into, I would highly recommend checking out Pitchshifter, because no matter what you like, I am sure you can find some of it in one Pitchshifter song or another.
