Doppleganger
Mad Sky/Throwing Stones 7" (Evil Twin Records -- 6201 Sunset Blvd. #217/Hollywood, California 90028 -- 213.397.9099)

By: Alex Steininger

Hailing from California, Doppleganger is a three-piece goth/rock band.

Gothic music never rubbed off on me. I mean, sure, there is some good gothic music I've heard, but for the most part it never appeals to me. After listening to this 7", the one thing that scared me the most was the fact that they have females doing the vocals, yet I would have sworn a male did the vocal work on both "Mad Sky" and "Throwing Stones." I tried, I really did, but that fact kept creeping up on me and I was reminded of it each time I listened to them.

Maybe I was confused, and a male did do vocals? Let's look at the back of the 7". Lead vocals/bass are created to Janna James, guitar/keyboards/vocals are credited to Joan Sceline, and drums are credited to Eric Blitz. Also on the back is a picture of two females and a man. Being the reasonable, stereotypical thinker I am, I came to the conclusion Eric was the man, thus he was only the drummer. So where did the vocals come from? I'm saying one of these females has a very manly voice, or my record player is broken?!?

As for the music, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. I listened to it, and it didn't have the hands it needed to grab me. These two songs just faded away into my mind, and as I sit here and listen to them again to remind myself of what songs they were again, I am once again reminded of the fact that these songs just go in one ear and out the next. I'll give it a C-.
