Videodrone
Videodrone (Reprise/Elementree Records)

By: Chris Paules

Listening to the latest release from Bakersfield quintet Videodrone (formerly Cradle Of Thorns) is a lot like an intricate china doll being broken and then put back together. On their first outing for Korn's Elementree label, Videodrone takes elements of industrial, rock, hip-hop, rap, and even disco and throw them into the Videodrone blender and render them new. Bridging the gaps of these genres are Videodrone frontman Ty Elam's haunting vocals, with lyrics ranging from "Have you seen my sanity/I seem to have left it at home/I feel pushed up against the wall/Like some Black Flag song" (as on the track "Closer To Coma") to "The cement floor/The garage door/Screwdrivers, fingers inside her/Down on all fours" (Power Tools For Girls) he brings imagery to mind that you wish wasn't there. Among the standout racks on this album there is "Alone With 20 Bucks," where Videodrone explores the corruptness of money and drugs. I felt this band has a lot of potential and is only going up in the world, but unfortunately the disc ran dry. Most of the songs seem to begin to start the same, with intricate synthesizers and sleight of hand guitar play. But when you finally delve into the songs they seem to take on a life of their own...teasing you with words and pulling you in with creative beats and intricate melodies. I'll give this album a B.
