 If an injection of trashy, blue-drenched punk rock depravity is what you crave then look no further than the eponymously titled fourth release from San Francisco's Phoenix Thunderstone. Instead of an all-new disc Phoenix Thunderstone is a collage of new cuts and tracks recorded live in concert and at radio shows showing all the aspects of the band. The three new cuts (including a great cover of Selena's "I Could Fall In Love" with guitarist Wendy Van Dusen on vocals), featuring newest member Vadge Moore of The Dwarves on drums and recorded by Steve Albini, show a punkier side to their sound with less emphasis on the blues. The live cuts on the other hand bring the raw, raucous edge of their prior releases, with them tearing through absolute killer renditions of "Stained Kiss of Trash" and "Unclean Love" and laying back into the swampy Gun Club-styled murk of "Dead Dance" and "Flower Gala". If you're a fan of bands like The Cramps, The Gun Club and Jon Spencer Blues Project, do yourself a favor and grab a copy of Phoenix Thunderstone.
