Kataklysm
The Prophecy (Stigmata of the Immaculate) (Nuclear Blast)

By: Jeb Branin

Through the first couple of tunes on the new one from Canada's premiere grind gurus I was a bit concerned. Things didn't seem to be living up to the high standard KATAKLYSM had set for themselves from day one. Their rabid grind seemed to have been tempered a bit. They just weren't over the top enough. They also seemed to have forgone their frantic delivery for a more "in-check" sound that seemed "mere" death metal. However, just as I was about to despair the CD takes off like a cave full of bats outta hell. Starting with track three "Stormland" and track four "Breeding The Everlasting" the album goes for right for the jugular and doesn't let go until it has drawn blood... a trait I have come to expect, and love, from KATAKLYSM. The corrupt vocals are almost as deranged as the virulent music. This is the kind of CD that drives people to join doomsday cults! After tracking through the rest of the disc, I got the vibe the band was going for... they have infused a significant amount of melody and texture into their grinding mayhem. With that vibe I was able to go back to the beginning of the CD and appreciate the first two tunes much more. In fact, once I "got it" and clued into the more mature sound the band has forged on "The Prophecy" I can't help but draw comparisons to the almighty NAPALM DEATH and the tremendous advancements they have made in their sound.
