6 Types of Silence - Still LIfe #5 (Self-Released)

By: Jeb Branin

Following along the lines of the 3" MCD "Still Life #4" JLIAT (aka James Whitehead) has released another sound sculpture that is an exploration not of sound but of a lack of sound. By writing continuous values of binary code into a PCM sound file JLIAT has produced an end result that is literally nothing more than six sub one second clicks followed by six 10 minute blocks of silence. In my mind the art in this case was in the creation of the piece not the outcome nor in the commodity that resulted (in other words the CD itself). In many people's mind having an art form with a commodity result cheapens the art and in my opinion the creation process here is to be admired not the product that came of it. The total combination of the six clicks on this disc last less than one second meaning there is over 59 minutes and 59 seconds of silence here. The silence is reflective and isn't truly "silent" if one considers environmental sound around them as part of the artistic piece but for me that just isn't satisfying and has been explored many other times by many other artists more effectively.
