Lucid Nation
Suburban Legends (Brain Floss Records)

By: Jeb Branin

It was bound to happen... Both live and on disc LUCID NATION has always utilized the vibrant edge afforded a band via improv, so it made sense that they would eventually explore doing an entire album of jazz (anti-jazz?) improvisation. "Suburban Legends" is not a bunch of bozos "jammin' out dude"--no way--it is a legitimate probe of that mysterious and exotic point where jazz and punk rock collide. They take their instantly identifiable chaos-core and let it dribble and trickle out of their brains in a volatile flow of ideas and expressions. Anger, humor, pathos and pure snottiness literally ooze out of this collection of compositions; often all at the same time. The music is ambiguous, esoteric and introspective while at the same time is completely exposes the very essence of the band. This music isn't for everyone (thank the stars!) and even some LUCID NATION fans are going to question whether the album as a whole might not constitute "too much of a good thing," but I can assure you that the emperor really does have clothes and this is a challenging but ultimately satisfying listen.
