Crowbar
Sludge: History of Crowbar (Spitfire)

By: Jeb Branin

It is not that there is anything wrong with the music of CROWBAR, in fact there is a lot right with it, but it just galls me as I listen to this that they are the biggest name in sludge/doomcore/molassescore in the world. I wouldn't be surprised if CROWBAR has sold as many records as every other slowcore band in the world combined. Seriously, it wouldn't surprise me a bit. Their Sabbath-worship is impressive, their songwriting is better than most and their musicianship goes without question but dammit they are just nowhere near as heavy, as gritty, as raw or as ugly as countless of their peers. I realize CROWBAR isn't necessarily trying to do the same things as true monsters of slow like GRIEF or NOOTHGRUSH or CORRUPTED instead they fall somewhere between that and true doom metal (ala SOLACE) but, again dammit, there are a lot of other bands who fall into that in-between no-man's land who deserve more attention. Bands like the totally warped BURNING WITCH or the masters of mid-paced mayhem 16. I don't want to detract from the quality of CROWBAR but do yourself a favor, don't buy a "best of" album with already released material by CROWBAR before you pick up albums by any of the other above mentioned bands, okay?
