Converge
Jane Doe (Equal Vision)

By: Jeb Branin

It should come as no surprise to fans of CONVERGE that their latest offering is a musical melee of extreme hardcore. They combine elements of everything from math metal to power violence in creating this aural fracas. The music consists of layers and layers of thrashing noise all stacked on top of each other. Most of the time everything is delivered at a million notes per second although several times the bands slows to a crawl for the sake of counterpoise. The expensive production job on the CD is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that it isn't often you get to hear hardcore this vicious and intense executing with such a massive sound - it is really quite mind-blowing. It is a curse in that there are moments when the rawness of the music, especially the throat shredding vocals, are undercut by an ultra-clean that is everything except raw. Fans of everything from screamo to DEP to BASTARD NOISE to the Slap A Ham sound are going to connect to "Jane Doe."15
