Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution (Relapse)

 Other than BURNT BY THE SUN, the only other band in recent memory to make as deep and significant impact in extreme music BEFORE releasing a full-length album was DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. Which is fitting since both bands share the same label, the same "blowtorch-to-your-face" vibe, and the same level of talent. "Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution" is the debut album from BURNT BY THE SUN, which is almost hard to comprehend since this band has already turned the underground music scene on its ear and is even proving a major influence for new bands. Needless to say expectations for this album were just slightly higher than "through the roof" and it would take only a minor miscue to disappoint. Fortunately for all involved (except for maybe the cilia in your inner ear), this album does more than meet expectations. It is significantly heavier and more devastating the EP and shows a heightened level of musical violence. The lyrics are intelligent and, dare I say, even significant, while the vox are buried a bit in the mix (just how I like them). Best of all, while sacrificing none of the virtuosity that is the hallmark of the band, they don't let the "math" overpower the "metal." The band knows the song needs to come before the pretense and they get it right on every single damn track. This album is destined to make so many "Top ten of the year" lists, it is almost ridiculous.
