Veggie Tales
The Adventures of Larryboy (Big Idea)

By: Randy Harward

Big Idea's tagline..."Saturday Morning Entertainment with Sunday Morning Values"...is pure marketing genius. When I was a kid I had plenty of buddies (born-agains, Catholics, Mormons) who were forbidden by their religious parents to watch cartoons because Scooby-Doo is just another euphemism for Satan (Relp me, Resus!). But then, like religious dogma (pun intended), that's not grounded in reality. The message the cartoons attempt to convey (sharing is good...Veggie Tales' Lyle the Viking...anger is bad...Larryboy, here) is given with the one-dimensional, simpleton's point-of-view that we share because God wants us to and we refrain from anger because God wants us to. It would seem a better idea to teach kids that sharing is good simply because it is, and anger is normal, but should be checked. If God must be in the mix, don't insult the intelligence of the children with this drivel. What a waste of quality animation. D, for "dog shit."
