The Seconds Y (5 Rue Christine) By: Cam Lindsay
Brooklyn, New York's The Seconds make music that has the intensity of a level that is way off the meter. On their debut album, Y, the trio kicks out a racket with 11 tracks in only 23 minutes. Seems like a rip-off for a full-length record, eh? Well, it's quite the opposite. Y is not some ordinary record. Using influences from the post-punk scene circa late 70s/early 80s, The Seconds use razor sharp guitar riffs, off-kilter drum beats and some of the thickest basslines ever heard in music. The vocals are shared by guitarist Zach Lehrhoff and bassist Jeannie Kwon, giving an even balance of screams, squeals and squawks by both sexes. It may not seem like the most melodic music alive, but after a few listens "Say Hey" can replace any pop radio hit hogging the airwaves currently occupying your mind. Spastic, groovy and extremely adrenalizing, Y is a debut album that not only brings back the past, but also shows the way of the future. A-
