 Canadian hip hop has been trying so hard to breakthrough to the world's market. Artists like Choclair, Maestro and Kardinall Offishall have been close, but not really. Scarborough's K-OS should be the one that ought to do it, both because he deserves it and because he is definitely the most talented artist in the Toronto scene. Exit is his long-awaited debut album and it is well worth the anticipation many people have invested into it. What makes K-OS so unique, especially when compared to a lot of the mainstream artists out there, is that he not only shines with intelligent and socially conscious subject matter, but his style of production. The first single, "Heaven Only Knows", is almost unreal. No fat Neptunes or Timbaland beats, weird noises or samples from famous oldies. Instead, it's acoustic guitar, a string section and some piano. Weird? Not really. Brilliant? Yes. What else comes with this impressive debut is a wide array of influences. Dub ("Superstar Pt 1"), R&B ("Call Me"), and yes, the fat beats ("The Anthem") are all present, and working in full effect. Welcome to Canada's first international hip hop star...hopefully. Grade: A
