Marilyn Manson Guns, God and Government World Tour (Eagle Rock Entertainment) By: Randy Harward
One can argue that Marilyn Manson copped Alice Cooper's act...and he did...but shock rock is all about topping one's predecessors, isn't it? The question, then, is: has Manson accomplished this? Has he done anything to top or enhance the contributions of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Sabbath/Ozzy, Kiss, Alice or GWAR? The performances and interviews on Guns, God and Government, offers a resounding "yes," however, the contribution is marginal. You see, Manson is a stopgap shock rocker. He merely served as proof of the genre's viability and relevance throughout the 90s. His shtick is borrowed and wholly uninspired and his musical well ran dry at Mechanical Animals. In the future, we can thank him only for serving as a bridge to shock rock's next innovator. B+ (for presentation)
