 On the latest His Name Is Alive, Last Night, vocalist Lovetta Pippen and mastermind Warn Defever take the music in the direction of the groove, soaking the songs of the past, their rich R&B/soul numbers, in jazz and funk and then infusing them with Afro-beats. The result is a gorgeous record of unparalleled proportions, the type of genre hopping, rules bending, musical creation that doesn't come along that often. Paying homage to so many musical styles and so many continents, His Name Is Alive makes world music that is unlike any other world music. I'll give it an A.
