Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions Suzanne EP (Rough Trade) By: Cam Lindsay
Though their album, Bavarian Fruit Bread, has been looming around for more than a year, Hope Sandoval and her Warm Inventions have released a new EP featuring one of the album's tracks. "Suzanne" is wispy and simple, yet contains the exquisite chimes of a graceful xylophone. The song doesn't stretch far beyond the realms of Mazzy Star, but Sandoval seems to be comfortable with that terrain. The b-sides are equally tranquil. "I Thought You'd Fall For Me" doesn't really go anywhere. Guided by some funereal organ, the song features only Sandoval's voice and some soft brushstrokes on the drums. "These Things" shows a little more atmosphere, featuring a bit of relaxed guitar work backing up the vocals. Again, it's not quite up to the single's standards, but it has charm because of Sandoval's gentility. The final track, "Friends of a Smile", shows the most hope of the three b-sides. Jaded babble by Sandoval mixes nicely with the ambience created in the background, most likely the work of Colm O'Ciosoig, formerly of My Bloody Valentine. Fans of Sandoval seem to be dedicated followers, so this should give them their kicks, but for newcomers, the album's probably a better place to start. B
