Piano Magic Writes Home Without Homes (4AD/Beggars) By: Alex Steininger
The London-based quartet Piano Magic adheres to the statement "slow and steady wins the race". Their songs move at a snail's pace, but it works to their advantage, as the songs crawl around, picking up various pieces of information along the way, creating a smooth, interesting ride for the listener. Like the best of soundtracks, Piano Magic plays to scenes, scenes directed by the listener, a movie that goes off in your mind, unraveling as the disc does. From relaxed orchestration to trickling piano that drops on your head like little rain pellets coming off the leaves as you walk through the forest. The damp, dark songs of Piano Magic follow the light at the end of the tunnel, guiding it through said forest as the songs describe what they see, painting a picture for the listener to fully grasp the concepts they speak of. It is a thrilling adventure, one Piano Magic takes you on for both your sakes. I'll give it an A.
