The Broken Family Band
The King Will Build A Disco (Snowstorm)

By: Cam Lindsay

This mini-album is a taster of what is to come from The Broken Family Band later in 2003. Setting their sights on making stunningly emotional alt.country pop, the band achieves it without sounding like they had to dig up their Flying Burrito Brothers and Byrds records for help. Based out of the UK and led by singer/songwriter Steven Adams, The Broken Family Band use just about every instrument necessary to pull off a true country sound, without going honky tonk. Fittingly, the seven songs are sad, mourning numbers, yet have plenty of life and melody to keep them afloat. "When We're Dry", a duet between Adams and Mary Epworth and the strongest track of the bunch, has the same kind of chemistry as Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris had in their heyday. The King Will Build A Disco is a consistent collection of heartbreak, sadness and more heartbreak. Get ready to be heartbroken.
