Dance To The Underground (City Slang)

By: Cam Lindsay

Left off of the North American version of their album Gotham!, for whatever ungodly reason, "Dance To The Underground" is Radio 4's best song to date. Featuring some of the best drum beats made by a real drummer all year, and a killer bassline, this track is an electrifying post-post-punk dance anthem. Normally four versions of one track are a bit of overkill, especially since remixes are usually such garbage, but Radio 4 have selected the best matches for them. The A-sides are strong mixes by Playgroup (Trevor Jackson) and The Faint, both showing off their eclectic tastes. The B-sides are the real treats however. Mastered by the trendy DFA team of Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy, the DFA version is how the song should be heard, complete with saxophone to bring it to true form. The other version, from the album, is the song at it's purest, sounding almost bare compared to the other mixes of it. Whichever one you pick, "Dance To The Underground" is one of the best anthems of 2002.
