Dredg El Cielo (Interscope) By: Alex Steininger
Indie-rock with strong production values and a knack for writing atmospheric songs rather than straight-ahead rock, Dredg's El Cielo differs from track to track, but somehow manages to pull it together. Whether they're writing a mediocre attempt at a guitar-rock song ("Convalescent") or delivering a beautiful, airy number that effortlessly helps you slip into a relaxing slumber ("Scissor Lock"), the band believes in diversity. And they embrace that thought throughout the album, changing things up enough so they don't get old, but not straying too far as to forget who they are and what they're about. And though there are some duds on the album, as an overall collection of songs, it's a good record that flows nicely with a few bumps along the way, which sometimes work in the record's favor, shaking you awake to appreciate the following track. I'll give it a C+.
