Pawtuckets Dogsbody Factotum (MADJACK Records) By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV
Sometimes you can tell good music by where you find yourself singing it. Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls" carried me through the long summers at the cannery and the Pawtuckets' "She's Gone" caused a few off looks in the elevator on a Monday morning. The Patuckets has a slight twang like Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers and Springsteen off the Tunnel Of Love album. It's a music that comes from the dry southwest where you learn to drive a tractor, and know the taste of struggle and dirt. It's music that comes from somewhere between point A and point B where everything moves a little slower and feels a little more real. If you have spent any time on the roads that crisscross this country, you've passed through it and have taken a part of it with you. Dogsbody Factotum carries a feel good vibe that suggests hope even under some of its darkest lyrics. "River Road" has its moments of Honky Tonk that reminds you of a good morning beer buzz from a time when you were young enough to do that. "Broken Heart" on the other hand, is one of those songs you hear knowing exactly how he feels cause we've all been there. This album, twang and all is an enjoyable listen that finds you singing along, and leaves you with a warm feeling like the first warm days of fall. Rating: B+.
