Alejandro Escovedo Thirteen Years [Reissue] (Lone Star Records) By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV
The Reissue of Alejandro Escovedo's dynamic album Thirteen Years, just proves what an asset he is the Musical world. The emotional honesty he relays in these songs come off at times as smooth as understanding; other times it's as raw and uncomfortable as confession. His song writing skills and musical arrangements merge together in tunes like " Way It Goes" and "Ballad Of the Sun and the Moon" which paint beautiful pictures and sets the mind to wandering. Escovedo isn't afraid to tear his soul open and leave it exposed to the trained ear of the listener. Even pushing up the tempo in songs like "Losing Your Touch" and "Mountain Of Mud," or expanding his tools of expression with the addition of symphonic strings on "Thirteen Years," he lays all the emotions on the table like a fish floundering out of water on the many moving songs of this powerful album. He even flirts with dirty jazz on "Helpless," with a walking bass line that struts around like a sassy high price hooker through a smoky 1920's speak-easy. Along with the original release material of this album the reissue comes with a bonus disc with instrumental mixes of some of the Thirteen Year tracks, live material from a 1993 show and the Buick MacKane (Escovedo's hard rock outfit) version of his song Gravity. Rating: B+.
