Overkill
Killbox 13 (Spitfire)

By: Jeb Branin

The most consistent and diehard band in thrash metal returns to wreck your neck yet again. "Killbox 13" by OVERKILL is one of their finest efforts to date and that is saying something! Of course, this is one of those bands that almost never takes a step backward? it seems like each time they release an album it is one of their best ever. I guess that is what happens when you have perfected your formula and have enough guts to stay true to your roots. OVERKILL are, simply put, metal legends and they would never do anything to tarnish their legacy. Their first two albums "Feel the Fire" and "Taking Over" were seminal thrash metal opuses but on 1988's "Under the Influence" (their third LP) the band hit their stride. They perfected the cheese grater riffs, the stop and go rhythms, and the venom spitting spite that would become their hallmark. "Killbox 13" is yet another cog in the wheel but in no way is it generic or a throwback. Instead it has a vitality (and viciousness) all its own. Bands that define their genre (think AC/DC, THE RAMONES, MOTORHEAD, UNLEASHED) never seem to wear out their welcome and OVERKILL is always welcome in my stereo!
