The Brian Jonestown Massacre Spacegirl & Other Favorites (The Committee to Keep Music Evil/Bomp!) By: Alex Steininger
![](/images/sep.gif)
A collection of "studio trash", as described by front man Anton Newcombe in the album's liner notes, Spacegirl & Other Favorites is a b-sides/outtake record that covers all the demos and rough mixes that should have, would have, and could have comprised the band's first album. This is their early years, a testament to the excess, an over-the-top, layered, and quite psychedelic (if not drug induced) recollection of rock 'n' roll as Newcombe knows it. Listen as they learn to gel as a band, as Newcombe becomes comfortable in the studio (and sometimes feels uncomfortable or out of place). Spacegirl & Other Favorites is the seed that spawned one of the best in the U.S.-based Brit-pop bands. Long, drawn out, and drugged, here is excess at its most indulgent. I'll give it a B-.
