Anberlin
Blueprints For The Blackmarket (Tooth & Nail Records)

By: Vinnie Apicella

Blueprints-- is an impressive debut for the Orlando-based fivesome Anberlin. Combining guitar-playing edginess with fluid vocals and catchy melodies, Anberlin crafts perfectly shaped song patterns that are easy to follow and instantaneously addictive. Reliant on a rugged low-E, Pop hook, and soaring verse, the results are memorable and meant to last with each song effortlessly defiant in its simplicity, proving the staying power of shorter, well-bred songs that form quickly without use of intrusive after effects. Yesterday's best hits always left the listener wanting more and that's the case here. "Readyfuels" and "The Undeveloped Story" are near twin-like in their rugged guitar entries and fast breaks, moving off into anthemic sing alongs that could command top flight ownership with Modern Rock radio with a little luck and a mere hint of exposure. "Change The World" and "Autobahn" are finer, lighter examples of a light-hearted, youthful exuberance playing off a veteran style leadership of many a past hit making master; summed up in only song, their stunning percussive cover of The Cure's "Love Song", timeless in itself, comes away as an energetic and breathless example of Anberlin's depth of talent. "Blueprints For The Blackmarket" is at the least deserving of accolades afforded bands several years and six or seven gold records into their career, and further, one of the most conscientious and complete bands to come out in some time. Imagine a combination that includes the driving guitar groove of groups like The Juliana Theory and Hoobastank with the melody making adult appeal of The Smiths or The Outfield, and you're soon warming to the touch of this classic in the making.
