Ezra Thomas
The Weight of Being (BUCK 50 Records)

By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV

When you're pushing through 3 CDs a night, there are times you run out of words to describe the music you're listening to, no matter how good they might be. With the clock reading 11:03 PM one cool Monday night, I discover myself in this exact position trying to describe Ezra Thomas' newest CD, The Weight of Being. The songs are a mix of thought provoking lyrics and music that has been tweaked just enough to be interesting yet not distracting. "Stereo" is a perfect example with Ezra Vancil's rich story-lyrics fusing with altered guitar licks phased in and out of a foundation of an acoustic strumming of a muted Mellencamp-esq tune. There are peculiar dream-like moments, as with "Kinsmen Redeemer" that reminds me at times of Malcolm Holcombe and even the occasional Cat Stevens. The Weight of Being mixes a grounded base structure that outlines the form of this music with a surreal bouquet of altered oddities filling in the details of these sleep-vision tunes, closely comparable to David Garza.
