Jimmy Thackery and The Drivers
True Story (Telarc)

By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV

Each time I listen to this album, I hear something different. From the rocking guitar of "Got It Going On," to the swaying groove of "Blues Man On Saturday Night" with its vicious guitar licks in the background. Thackery's vocals sound deep and rough like his belly is full of gravel. This steady blues has the strength to carry a show deep into the night when the drinks are stiff but they flow a little slower and the bodies moving on the dance floor are as close as they can get with cloths on. The smoldering of a long burn infests songs like "Baby's Got The Blues" making your body ache with longing. This music is like desire, it effects the deep tissues as the masters before him like Sonny Boy Williams II, and Howlin' Wolf. Thackery heads up the music of this album with a clean guitar sound that isn't stuck with following the blues style and is more about making miracles happen with six strings give the songs of this album an awesome flavor. But the true meat of the sound captured on this CD comes for the work of The Drivers with the sweet saxophone of Jimmy Carpenter; Ken Faltinson on Bass and the occasional B3, Mark Stutso laying down the drum beat and Reba Russell with background vocals which all come together for a fearsome collaboration on songs like "Puttin' Out Fires." This is the kind of music made for whiskey and lovers, so put this CD on and pull someone close or drink the whiskey down and catch that sweet burn in your chest that feels like love before it sets your head swimming.
