Now, More Than Ever (Three Gut)

 As a solo artist and member of Royal City, singer/songwriter Jim Guthrie is always at the forefront of Toronto's rising indie music scene. Establishing himself with 2001's A Thousand Songs and 2002's Morning Noon Night, Guthrie's creative wordplay and stunning musical backdrops become stronger with each release. Now, More Than Ever, his third record in as many years, is his most ambitious work to date, achieving the perfect mix of whimsy pop and warm, orchestrated lullabies. Recorded by the soon to be legendary Andy Magoffin (Constantines, The Hidden Cameras, Two Minute Miracles), Guthrie's charm is captured in the same vein as Badly Drawn Boy's first album, through simple melodies and a big heart. However, unlike Damon Gough as of late, Guthrie knows when to be subtle with a guitar solo ("Lovers Do") and avoid the humorless wisecracking to keep the listener interested. Recruiting some of his local friends from bands like Constantines, The Hidden Cameras and Rockets Red Glare, the arrangements feature everything from the banjo, sax, flute and various strings and are performed with the utmost precision. Now, More Than Ever is an instant classic pop record that gives goosebumps with each new melody (and trust me, there is a lot of them).
