Nice Nice
Chrome (Temporary Residence)

By: Cam Lindsay

With a firm grasp of what no-wave is and how to achieve it with two people by sounding like there is a full army, Nice Nice are true masters of their domain. Featuring guitarist Jason Buehler and percussionist Mark Shirazi, Nice Nice are not strictly a noise act out to wake up the neighbors. No, instead of carelessly pounding on their instruments, the pair fuses free jazz, funk, ambient, and angular indie rock along with pure, unadulterated noise to achieve their model. Their debut Chrome, isn't without direction, yet it doesn't travel in one constant motion. Deciding without any hints to be loud and abrasive minus any warning, it always keeps you guessing as to what sounds and interpretations the duo will introduce next. Chrome isn't quite the beautifully schizophrenic mess of last year's Beaches and Canyons by Black Dice, but there are some truly brilliant moments of abstractness that make it a riveting piece of its own.
