The Unicorns
Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? (Alien8 Recordings)

By: Cam Lindsay

Besides having the greatest band name in the history of rock, Montreal's The Unicorns can back up such an honor with their magical music. Releasing their independent debut album in 2003, The Unicorns Are People Too, mere months before their second, the duo of Nicholas "Niel" Diamonds and Alden Ginger also know how to work those prolific songwriting abilities. Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?, their first album for Montreal-based Alien8 Recordings, is a waggish trip through ailing Casio keyboards, both fuzzy and jangly guitars and some of the most nonsensical, yet plentiful pop moments in recent years. Though the cohesiveness can be a little offputting for some at first, the idiosyncratic humor of the band makes up for that, transforming those feelings into a to-die-for pleasure. Using a clash between lo-fi recording, experimentalism and catchy pop hooks, The Unicorns have built themselves a symphonic wonderland of marvelously amusing imagery. The Unicorns truly are magnificent beasts.
