Stop me if you think you've heard this one before-- (Rough Trade)

By: Cam Lindsay

Reaching the ripe age of 25 years old, Geoff Travis' Rough Trade Records has chosen a splendid way of celebrating such an achievement. Stop me if you think you've heard this one before-- is a smart compilation that sees some of the some label's current roster performing tracks from the legendary back catalogue. Without any real stand out tracks, the album makes for a good listen from start to finish. Highlights include The Hidden Cameras' rendition of The Clean's "Dunes", British Sea Power taking the weirdness down a notch for a straightforward version of Galaxie 500's "Tugboat" and Belle & Sebastian's trip to the disco with "Final Day", originally by the awesome Young Marble Giants (who are also covered here by Adam Green). Unfortunately, The Strokes are absent from the bands performing, yet two of their songs make it. Royal City tackle "Is This It" and manage to transform it into a wonderfully slumberous lullaby, while The Detroit Cobras cheat "Last Nite" of it's cool charm by switching the genders of the subject matter. Such glorification of The Strokes for a label of 25 years is questionable (what about The Smiths???), but fans of both the label's current bands and those of yore will enjoy this well planned collection.
