The M's The M's (Brilliante) By: Alex Steininger
Drowsy, stoned indie-rock with a noisy appetite, and a penchant for pop brewing, Chicago's The M's deliver a guitar-drenched self-titled debut here, offering up twelve selections of their noise-branded, fuzzy indie-rock, concoctions that make you feel as if you're in acid, as the room spins. The songs are heavy and loud, they're just slower than other bands of their ilk, helping to further the acid-trip affect the songs have on you. But, once that affect wears off, you sit there, wide-eyed and listen to the band's ability to make things noisy and, oft-times messy, and somehow come out with a diamond when it only seemed there was coal to work with. It's a unique formula, one most bands couldn't pull off, but one The M's carry well. If at times it drags or makes you feel as if they've lost themselves, it's probably because they have swallowed themselves with the stoned approached of their songwriting, but they always end up coming out and coming up with something good. It's part of the charm, the element of surprise that helps them string the songs together. I'll give it a B-.
