Saturday Looks Good To Me

 Last year, 2003 was blessed with the debut album by Fred Thomas' exuberant Saturday Looks Good To Me. All Your Summer Songs gave us all a good kick in the pants, reviving the 1960s heyday of dreamy, organ-laced pop music we could dance to. Most appealing though was the revolving door treatment Thomas gave to his song's vocals. Featuring the likes of Ted Leo, Tara Jane O'Neil, Jessica Bailiff and Karla Schickele, the project was a blinding success that upped everyone's ability to shake it. As a quick bite to eat while we wait for a follow-up album (yes, we are hungry for more), Thomas has given fans a chance to gobble up this very limited EP of brand new songs. Released through a special mail-order only series by Polyvinyl (only 700 copies have been pressed and no, they won't be found in stores), this EP sees Thomas taking over lead vocals for all three tracks. "Diary" is possibly his finest song to date, with enough sentiment to convince us all to go out and purchase a diary to keep track of the teenage thoughts we still harbor. "When You Go Out Tonight" and "Girl Of Mine" both hark back to 40 years ago, when saxophones and Hammond organs ruled the roost in upbeat pop songs. Though the running time doesn't quite reach seven minutes, every little cent that goes towards the purchase of this disc is worth it.
