Brides of Destruction
Light Another Candle (Sanctuary Records)

By: Mike SOS

Nikki Sixx and Tracii Guns in the same band may sound like it's too good to be true for the average metal fan, but it is in fact one-half of the lineup of Brides of Destruction, whose nine-track release packs the wallop both men have been yearning to find since the late '80s. From the gritty opener "Shut the Fuck Up", a electric charge is sent through the system, showing that this is the real deal and not another lame side project by two aging rockers. In fact, the band, rounded out by Scot Coogan and (how's this for a name) London La Grand, embody the rock star stance which Guns and Sixx have groomed for over two decades, as tracks like the scorchingly heavy "2X Dead" and the attitude-driven "I Don't Care" aptly show the band as a tight, focused band and not one member's self-indulgent romp. Commercial hard rock seems to be on the resurgence, and who better than two of the founding members of the '80s Los Angeles scene to bring it back with the proper fervor? Taking the music to familiar places with different twists, Brides of Destruction, unlike a rumored Motley Crue reunion or a reformed LA Guns, provide fresh perspectives on well-traveled themes, sans all the bullshit and drama. Get this and see why Nikki is such an underappreciated songwriter and Tracii is the unsung guitar hero from the hair metal era.
