Le Scrawl
Eager to Please (Life Is Abuse)

By: Jeb

The first time I head Le SCRAWL years and years ago, I was completely floored by their one-of-a-kind take on grindcore. They combined sewer growling grind with keyboards, melodic breaks, horns, and the kitchen sink. Back then nobody was trying to do anything different or new with the sound (after all, the sound itself WAS new and different) consequently I sang the praises of Le SCRAWL to all who would listen (which was pretty much nobody). Over the years I lost touch with the band and admittedly basically forgot about them. I hadn't listened to them in years. So I was thrilled when a copy of the 'Eager to Please' CD found its way into my review pile. I was even more pleased when I noticed that it was produced by Harris Johns, one of my favorite knob turners. But much to my surprise and dismay, when I put the CD on, I wasn't thrilled, pleased, or even bowled over. Nothing about Le SCRAWL has changed, they are still spewing out a delightfully twisted take on grindcore, it's just that in the past several years countless bands have emerged that do revolutionary things with the original grindcore sound and many of those bands have nailed a sound that is more invigorating than Le SCRAWL. This isn't a bad album. Not by a long shot. In fact, I have listened to it several times since it came, it's just that the novelty and inventiveness of Le SCRAWL has worn off (simply due to the passage of time) and hence one of my favorite aspects of the band is lost.
